Trying to contact relatives of my ancestors who settled in Boone County, ILL. Surnames being researched include: Postlethwaite, Stevenson, Heath, Lautherbach and Tripp. All or most came to Boone County and settled near Bonus Prairie or Garden Prairie about 1840. I'm particularly interested in genealogical information concerning brothers, Edward and Loudy Stevenson, and a document called "Will Heath's Story" from the late 1800s or early 1900s. I'm a direct descendant from Loudy Stevenson and James, Thomas, and Hayes William Postlethwaite of that area. Thanks for posting something to me. Threads are fewer and fewer as the years pass by. I have some stuff on the Stevensons from Baltimore County, MD and some on the Postlethwaites from Kirkby Ireleth, England. There is an entry on a marriage index for John Thorp and Julia Hinman on Oct. 1, 1846 in Boone County. There is also an entry for an Edward Thorp (I suspect he's John's brother) who married Phebe Ellsworth on Jan. 29, 1846. I would like copies of the original records for both of those, if they exist. (It's possible that Phebe died in Boone Co. around late 1846 to early 1850's. Maybe there is a cemetery record for her.) I also have found land purchase entries for John & Edward in Boone County in Aug. & Oct. 1844. I would like to get copies of the purchase & sale deeds. I have the exact dates & locations of the land. They both were in Fayette County, Iowa by 1860. John is supposedly on the 1852 state census for Iowa. I couldn't find Edward on the 1850 Boone Co. census so maybe he went to Iowa before John. Subject: Marriage records for Boone County

Do you have a marriage record for Peter Peterson (Haslerud) and (Gunnhild?) Cornelia (Aslaksdaughter) (Anderson) (Teigen). Married 5 Jan.1853 in the Town of Loery, Boone County, Illinois. In the spring of 1853 they moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota where Peter founded the small town of Peterson. I am most interested in what name Peter's wife went by. This is important to verify where she came from. These Norwegians changed their names at the drop of a hat. Thanks, Bruce Larson

I am trying to locate information on Mary E. Boone who was known to have lived in Flora (interestingly enough, in Boone Co.) in 1926. Mary was listed in the probate papers of Thomas Edward Brown of Jefferson Co., IL as "heir-at-law." She is the only one listed on the papers without mention of a relationship to Thomas. All others are listed as sister, brother, niece, nephew and one cousin. I suspect she must be a niece or cousin. Boone may have been Mary's married name. Possible maiden names: Brown, Vance, Lowery, Patterson, Thomas

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I am curious as to the history of the naming of Boone Co. Thank you, so much, for your help. Pam Collins Orange, CA

My ancestors Eugene and Mary Sullivan came to Belvidere from Ireland about 1855. They were married in the Belvidere area. Eugene's brother Boetius and Eugene were traveling salesmen between Belvidere and Janesville, WI. The family is buried at St James Catholic Cemetery. I'm copying some of my notes on them below. More info is available on my webpage: http:⁄⁄www.avana.net⁄~mhook

Eugene came to US probably about 1855-1860 because he was married in US and living in Belvidere with 2 sons by 1861. Eugene was a section hand on the railroad and later worked in a saloon, as a tax collector, and a peddler with his brother Boetius selling Kenmare linen and lace from a wagon between Belvidere and Janesville, WI.

RCS was born on South State Street, Belvidere in 1861. Boetius from Plankinton, S.D. (Eugene's son) paid taxes on a lot with a building on it in 1887. This location was later the Harnish McCarton Building and now (1979) houses a knitting shop. Bessie and Emmett Sullivan (Belvidere historians no relation to us) said that their impression was that the Sullivans had a sort of tavern or pub and the family ran it themselves and lived above it. Main Street, HSMcK has a picture in her papers.

Bessie showed HSMcK city waterworks corner of Whitney and Meadow and Locust and said first Sullivan (Eugene's) home was here. Maryl has a picture of this house.

Excerpt from E B Sullivan, Jr's notes: (the rest is on my webpage) My father, Eugene Boetious Sullivan, Sr., was born in 1869 in Belvidere at about the present location of the historical museum on Whitney Street. When he was very young (he was the first child), the family moved to a farm in Spring Township, Boone County, just north of Fern Hill. The farmhouse was a log cabin, which was, I assume, quite common at the time, the early 1870's, scarcely fifty years after the coming of the first settlers to this area.

My father told of waking up in the mornings, during winter, with snow on the bed clothes. The family moved back to Belvidere and then moved again to the same farm, apparently after a relatively short time. It seems that my father spent most of his life, until grown up some time later, on the farm. Grandpa bought the farm, but I don't know whether it was when they first moved there or at some later time. The one hundred eleven acre farm was not as small for those days as it would be today. Seven children were born: Eugene, Timothy, John, Mary, Henry, Joe and little Rose, who died at the age of three.

Hi, folks! I need some advice and guidance from the Boone County area. My GGGrandfather George Walker, his wife Elizabeth Walker, and children Mary-Anne, Thomas, George, Elizabeth and Letitia arrived at the Port of New York, from Ireland on May 31, l849. My GGrandmother was Letitia, the youngest child. Her 1921 obituary states that the family "settled in Boone County, Illinois where she grew to young womanhood". Although I have no doubt they settled there, Federal Census records to which I have access for 1850 and 1860 show no record of the family. Could anybody check the State census for me for 1855, 1860, and 1865? Also, the obit states that Letitia Walker married my GGfather Thomas Wake on October 11, l864. His obit says they were married October 11, 1866. Their first child Harriet Wake was born in 1868, and they moved to Iowa in 1869 or '70. I don't know the eventual location of the rest of the family, but they all preceded Letitia in death. I need somebody to look up a variety of census records, death records, marriage records, and other information to trace down the Walkers of Boone County, or tell me where I can find this information otherwise. Let me know of your interest and terms, and I will provide a shopping list. Rodney Wake, Wichita, Kansas. jrwake@feist.com

I have been to the Burr Oak Cemetary on the Boone Co. and McHenry Co. line are there any records for the graves there. Last time I was there I found most of my families grave stones still readable and in good condition considering there age (some go back to 1857) I also found a corner of a marker just under the ground and would like to know if there is a list of persons buried there. Thanks Sherrie Nash-Bryant.

Am interested in information regarding the Menzie Family of Belvidere. My Great-Grandfather was murdered along the railroad line. I am looking for more information on my Grandmother (Jennie May Menzie Welch) and her two sisters. They were Hazel Menzie Grimm Shaw and Pearl Menzie Critchfield. I am sure there are relatives still in the area. Thanks for your help.

Looking for information on the descendants of Benjamin Bowman who lived in Boone Co mid-to-late 1800's. My ancestor Cynthia Jane Bowman, the youngest of 10 or 11 children, married William Henry Lilley, and they lived in NE and MO. Three of her brothers died in the Civil War. What happened to the other children?

SEARCHING COPPERNOLL AND WOODRUFF FAMILIES

Currently I am trying to locate information on Ruth Ann WOODRUFF who married Burton F. COPPERNOLL. Their daughter, Jennie S. COPPERNOLL was my grandfather's first wife and I would like to extend my COPPERNOLL family information to include the WOODRUFF line. Burton COPPERNOLL and Ruth Ann WOODRUFF were married July 5, 1870 and had three children together: Jennie S., b. 1872; Frank b. 1875 and Ori Benjamin, b. 25 August 1877. All of the children were born at Grass Lake, Jackson County, MI. Burton and Ruth Ann were divorced prior to 1891, and Ruth Ann went⁄returned to Boone County, IL- where she is said to have died on June 18 1940 at Rockford. According to the Coppernoll family history, Ruth Ann WOODRUFF was born in 1852 in Lodi Township, Washtenaw County, MI and I know she had at least one sister, Helen WOODRUFF who married Lyman Burdett COPPERNOLL. Would like to hear from others researching the COPPERNOLL and⁄or WOODRUFF lines or any other related families connecting to the above. Thank you so much for your assistance.Patrick McCleary at Patrick@northlink.net
